Eat like you're pregnant

When I was on Millionaire, Meredith Vieira announced to the nation that my husband and I would like to try for another baby. (By the way, Meredith - still waiting for my check!) So, I guess it's okay to talk about such things here on my blog, since Ms. Vieira thought it okay to tell the WORLD.

So, yes - we're trying to have another child. Although, with the way my 2 year old has been acting lately, I'm crazy for wanting another one. I'm going on faith that this is just a phase and that my sweet and lovable 2 year old will return to me someday.

Anyway, if you're a regular here (and I hope you are!), then you know I've been struggling with my weight loss for a while now. I've been trying to come up with a plan that:

  1. is easy to do.
  2. is nutritious.
  3. WORKS.
After coming through the Thanksgiving holiday with a couple of extra pounds, I decided to re-think my strategy. This whole weight thing is very mental for me (and yea, I'm a bit mental as well). Monday night I had a brilliant idea that I think will work well for me:

Eat like I'm pregnant.

I'm not talking about the "ohmygod I'm STARVING"-eating for two-kind of preggo eating. I'm talking about the healthy-whole foods-no artificial stuff-easy on the heavy meals-lots of veggies and fruit-kind of preggo eating.

I want to be pregnant soon, so in the meantime, why can't I just eat like I am? This way, when and if I do get knocked up, I'm already eating well (and have hopefully shed a few pounds in the process).

Here's what I've done so far:
  • I stopped eating the VitaTops in the morning for now. There are two reasons: they have lots of "stuff" in them (i.e. extra vitamins and soy), and they're expensive. Since I'm already taking a pre-natal vitamin, I didn't want to overdo the supplements.
  • I'm having either oat bran, oatmeal or eggs for breakfast.
  • I'm also cutting out the Clif bars and cutting back on the Morningstar Farms chicken patties, also because of the extra "stuff" in these foods. Not saying they're bad - just that they're processed and I'm trying to get away from that.
  • I'm using chicken breast meat, turkey, peanut butter, lean ground beef and lean pork. Lots of veggies and more fruit.
  • I cut out my Weight Watchers ice cream at night, instead having a cup of decaf tea and maybe a cookie or two (total calories about 70 for two cookies).
  • I do have some snack sized Haagen-daz bars in the fridge for when I get a big craving for ice cream. But - there are only 2 of them, and they are small, about 170 calories each.
I haven't made it to the gym this week, since I caught the cold everyone in my house has had. I'm hoping by Friday I'll be up for working out again.

So, that's the plan! Let's see if the scale agrees. What do you guys think? Is "eating like you're pregnant" a good way to go?

Sounds like it's worth a shot :)

I thought I had more to say, but the lack of coffee came over me, LOL

Eating mindfully is always good.
Sometimes mixing things up can make a big difference & having a new mindset, especially one that includes a non-weight related goal, could really push you along.

Oh, your sweet 2 year old? She should return when she is...hmmm, moving out? lol
Mine went from temper tantrums at 2 to drama queen at 3, which lasted to around 4.5. Been fabulous since then, which is nice since the other one is in the 2 year old temper tantrum phase. lol

Best wishes all around!
Lynn

My friend had been trying to lose weight so she was eating healthy all the time. Then she got pregnant! So she didn't have a hard time saying no to all those "unhealthy" food. Good luck to you! :)

That sounds very sensible. Nutrition and health, put together. Good stuff.

Sounds like a great plan. I have a friend that ate so clean when she was pregnant that she actually looked better after giving birth than she did before. There is no time like the present. The healthier you are now will only make it easier once you are pregnant and getting back in shape afterward.

Since I'm new here, I didn't know you were on Millionaire. That is so cool!

I think it sounds like a good idea... I feel best when I eliminate the fast food and sleep better when I pass on the super processed foods.. all the various diet plans are so confusing... grains are good.. grains are bad.. fat is bad.. fat is good.. etc.. just trying to figure out what's best for *my* body...

Sounds like a great idea and doable!

I don't know much about how you eat when you're pregnant except that my mom ate a ton of liver when she was pregnant with me, and that you do eat clean and nutritiously, so sounds good, especially if it makes you extra conscientious. The other one that I always thought of instead was "eat like you're diabetic" - since people always seem to be able to lose all their weight *after* getting diabetes, I always thought isn't it a shame they couldn't lose it *before* they got diabetes?

I think it sounds like a very good plan. When I had kids the big things were don't drink or smoke, but all kinds of other stuff were still a-okay...it is a wonder the came out the way they did!

Jen, months ago, when you first started your journey to lose wieght I recommended that you read, The Body Fat Solution by Tom Venuto. As I have been reading your blog lately, and reading about your challenges, and struggles, I just can't stop referring to that book in my head. If there was a way for me to scream it at you I would. . .READ THE BOOK. It seriously opened my eyes and completely changed my thinking on fitness and weight loss. Just saying.

Also, I like you're thinking on eating as if you were pregnant. I think Tom Venuto would also approve.

I do think its a great idea... you don't need all those "extras" anyway. Can't wait to see how this works out for you... GO GIRL!!! :-)

I think that's an excellent way to go. You eat like that when you're pregnant because you're taking care of another human and you want the best for the baby. Why not want the best for yourself too? You're worth it!

What an amazingfantasticallygreat idea! I love it!

And thank you for the kind comment you left on my fatass post today. I really appreciate it! It was kinda crazy watching all that play out on Twitter, especially when I was still trying to hit my NaNoWriMo goal. Weird.

Anyway. Happy trying!

Jenn - I think it's a great idea! That's how I try to eat - clean eating! I can always tell when I slip because I just feel off.

There are some fab magazines and resources out there that are all about unprocessed deliciousness! My favorites are Clean Eating magazine, Eating Well magazine (and e-newsletter) and Heart Healthy Living magazine...

That is an excellent idea! I can't wait to see how that turns out for you.

I agree - getting back to natural is the most healthful way and will no doubt benefit you - plus make it habit now and when you are preggo, it will be easier :)
I'm so excited for you both to be trying for number three! I, too, find myself wanting a baby - but then watch my children shriek high pitched enough to bust my ear drum and whine "can I have a drink, can i have a drink, can i have a drink" - I wonder if I'm sane lol... but I'm excited for you and happy that you're in a place in your life that you can. such a blessing.
I hope I can join you there soon ;)

I think that if you're excited about it and it feels good, then it's the perfect plan. :-)

You know what, this same thing is in the back of my head too, when I was low carbing I kept thinking that I couldn't eat like this when I'm pregnant, and I was nervous about how I'd survive. However, now I'm focusing on real foods. Cutting out fake sugars and processed foods-mostly(aside from the caffeine and the alcohol which will ONLY go when there is a verified bun in the oven). Great plan!

I think it's a great idea! Wanting to start trying for a family in the near future is one of the main reasons I think I am having the success I have been so far with my own weight loss journey. I want my body to be a healthy home for the nine months it will house my first child!

A lot of women who struggle with fertility change their whole food selections. (Not that you have trouble with fertility - I was just thinking about how we change things in preparation for babies.) I think that your desire to have another baby and deciding to eat healthy, smaller portions is perfect!

I'm rooting for twins.

This is a great way to conceptualize healthy eating. And I do find that clients often come to me wanting to clean up their eating because they are pregnant. Which is great, but weren't you worth it before the baby?

Absolutely! The best thing you can do for your future child is prepare your body for pregnancy. Horse breeders do it... but we usually don't. And then we expect our kids to live a long, healthy life on a body made from junk food and toxins. It doesn't work that way. Whole foods rule! And you may just find that you'll get there quicker on whole foods too.
